Rose in TimeRose Green loves living in the past; it’s the present she has trouble with.
She’s floundering through her Classics program at Harvard, toiling at a trendy Cambridge restaurant, beguiled by the distractingly charming British classmate Oscar, and plagued by a persistent cough. Rose’s friend Gloria offers an explanation for all of Rose’s difficulties: Rose is an empath, absorbing the emotional pain of people she encounters every day. Rose scoffs, but she’s so desperate she agrees to visit Visible Effects, the organization Gloria suggests near Harvard Square. At VE, to her initial skepticism and growing astonishment, Rose discovers reincarnation is more than a hypothetical. Rose learns to time travel, helping the past incarnations of people struggling around her in the present. As she interacts with their previous selves, their current troubles and Rose’s cough evaporate. But when Rose encounters Oscar in the past, having fallen in love with him in the present, she must choose between following VE’s rules and her happiness, a conundrum that forces her to confront and vanquish her own past self’s worst nightmare. |
